Gender Equality Festival 2021: from Women’s Day to the Generation Equality Forum/India Programme
The Generation Equality Forum which
set off in Mexico
City on 29th March and culminates in Paris
on 2nd July is the most significant milestone for gender equality
since the Beijing world conference in
1995. This ground-breaking multi-generational campaign and global gathering is convened
by UN Women and co-hosted by the
governments of Mexico and France.
Considering
that no country has so far achieved full gender equality, the Forum will foster
a series of transformative actions,
including investments and policies, to accelerate the progress for gender equality
by 2030. Action
Coalitions will announce
concrete plans of action and bold commitments to this effect, especially
in the light of the COVID-19 pandemic which has pushed back progress
with respect to equality.
As
stated in the joint press release from the President of the French Republic,
H.E. Mr Emmanuel Macron,
and the Executive Director of UN Women,
Mr Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, on 8th March,
“During this crisis, we did not give up- quite the opposite. Despite
the pandemic, because
of the pandemic, we have redoubled our efforts. We are more determined than ever to make
progress and go forward…. We will convene Governments, international
organizations, civil society,
youth, the private sector and activists from the entire world to make concrete, ambitious
and sustainable commitments towards achieving gender equality.”
Action Coalitions’ themes
include gender-based violence,
economic justice and rights, bodily
autonomy and sexual and reproductive health and rights, feminist action
for climate justice, technology and innovation for gender equality, and
feminist movements and leadership.
In India, a series of events, organised
by the Embassy of France / French Institute in India in collaboration with the Alliance Françaises network in India and
their partners will take place from March
to June. A list of key initiatives is enumerated below.
Announcing the programme of activities, H.E. Mr Emmanuel Lenain, Ambassador of France to India, said, “Gender parity and diversity are the cornerstones of civil society and are vital criteria for economic growth. Gender equality is a priority for the French government and is taken into account with respect to all domains, including sustainable development, security, defence, environment, economic policy, and education. Gender parity drives our cultural engagement, our scholarship disbursements for higher education in France, and governs scientific research. I am proud of the rich and diverse set of initiatives that will be held in collaboration with our Indian partners until the Generation Equality Summit in Paris on 2nd July.”

WOMEN IN BIODIVERSITY / Feature on Ecofeminism May, 2021
In partnership with Agence Française de Développement (French Development Agency)
Women play a crucial role and influence biodiversity conservation. Any sustainable solutions cannot exclude the gender perspective. The government of Assam, with the support of the French Development Agency, initiated the Assam Project on Forest and Biodiversity Conservation (APFBC) in 2012 to restore forest ecosystems, protect wildlife, and enhance the livelihood of the forest-dependent communities. This project, whose second phase was launched in 2019, worked closely with the women of local communities, empowering them through participatory planning and imparting skills to enable them to renew local economy, without impacting forest resources but also to build financial independence. This project will narrate stories of the journeys of these women.
At the national level, France is committed to ensuring that 50% of
its official
development assistance is attributed – through the Agence Française
de Développement – to projects
with gender equality as a significant or main objective.
